Improving access to clean drinking water and sanitation in a rural area of Balkh province
Client: Generous Benefactor (National Merchants)
Project Description:
The overall goal of this project was to provide the residents of village of Bagh-e Oraq with access to clean drinking water. One of the villagers informed us that due to the lack of access to clean water, people in the village frequently suffered from various diseases, and students of religious schools were forced to carry water from distant places daily. This task became particularly difficult during the hot summer days and even more challenging in the winter season. Through this project, 60 families, with an average of 5-7 members each, benefit directly. To nearby schools, one with 400 female students and the other with 300 male students, also gained access to drinking water. In total, more than 1000 people were direct beneficiaries of this project. Additionally, as the well was drilled in a location where passersby can also access the water, unknown number of indirect beneficiaries also expected to benefit from this project. Upon the completion of the well drilling, four solar panels were installed by the OHSDA team, and an 8000-liter water tank was placed near the well to ensure a sufficient water supply at all times. To further facilitated access for the school students, to water taps were directed to the schools, so that students could easily access water. The main water tap was placed in a location were both the villagers and passersby could benefit from it.
